Isostatic adjustment
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006718
The process by which the Earth's lithosphere responds to changes in load, such as the growth or melting of ice sheets, by vertically adjusting its elevation to maintain hydrostatic equilibrium. This involves the slow flow of material in the underlying asthenosphere. It is a long-term geological process that affects sea level and land elevation over millennia.
