Geostrophic vorticity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005955

The component of vorticity that is derived solely from the geostrophic wind field. It represents the rotation of the horizontal flow that results from the balance between the Coriolis force and the pressure gradient force. This quantity is a key diagnostic tool in synoptic meteorology for understanding large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns.
