Geostrophic momentum approximation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005954

A simplification in atmospheric dynamics where the advection of momentum is calculated using geostrophic velocities, rather than the true wind velocities. This approximation is valid for large-scale, slow-moving atmospheric flows where the Coriolis force and pressure gradient force are nearly balanced. It is often applied in theoretical models of synoptic-scale weather systems.
