Geostrophic deviation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005948

The vector difference between the actual wind velocity and the geostrophic wind velocity. This deviation represents the ageostrophic component of the flow, which is responsible for vertical motion and the evolution of weather systems. It is caused by accelerations, friction, or curvature in the flow, indicating a departure from the idealized geostrophic balance.
