Geostrophic departure
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005947
The difference between the actual wind velocity and the geostrophic wind velocity at a given point in the atmosphere. This vector quantity indicates the ageostrophic component of the flow, which is driven by forces other than the pressure gradient and Coriolis forces. It is particularly noticeable in areas of strong curvature or rapid changes in wind speed, such as jet streams or frontal zones.
