Geostrophic coordinates
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005945
A coordinate system where one axis is aligned parallel to the geostrophic wind vector and the other is perpendicular to it, pointing towards lower pressure. This natural coordinate system is employed in dynamic meteorology to study flow relative to features like fronts and jet streams. Unlike a standard Cartesian (x, y) system, the axes in geostrophic coordinates rotate and translate with the evolving large-scale flow, providing a different perspective on ageostrophic motions.
