Quasigeostrophic approximation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008242

A set of simplifications applied to the primitive equations of atmospheric motion, assuming that the flow is nearly geostrophic and hydrostatic. This approximation filters out high-frequency gravity waves, allowing for a focus on synoptic-scale weather systems. It is a fundamental tool in theoretical meteorology for understanding large-scale atmospheric dynamics.
