Quasigeostrophic equations

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008244

A simplified set of equations of motion used in atmospheric and oceanic modeling, derived from the primitive equations under the assumption of quasigeostrophic flow. These equations filter out high-frequency sound and gravity waves, focusing on the slower, synoptic-scale motions that are responsible for weather development. They are widely used for theoretical studies and diagnostic analysis of large-scale atmospheric phenomena.
