Quasigeostrophic equilibrium

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008245

A state in the atmosphere or ocean where the forces governing large-scale motion are nearly in geostrophic balance, with small departures allowing for slow evolution. This equilibrium is characterized by a near-balance between the Coriolis force and the pressure gradient force. It is a foundational concept in understanding the dynamics of mid-latitude weather systems.
