Quasigeostrophic motion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008246
Atmospheric or oceanic flow that is nearly in geostrophic balance, but includes small ageostrophic components that permit vertical motion and the evolution of weather systems. This approximation simplifies the full set of fluid dynamics equations by filtering out fast-moving sound and gravity waves. It is widely used in theoretical meteorology to understand the dynamics of synoptic-scale weather phenomena.
