Quasigeostrophic

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008241

Describing a theoretical framework in atmospheric dynamics that simplifies the primitive equations by assuming a near-geostrophic balance for the horizontal wind and a hydrostatic balance for the vertical pressure gradient. This approximation is valid for large-scale, synoptic motions in mid-latitudes, where the Rossby number is small. It provides a tractable set of equations for understanding the development of weather systems.
