Primitive equations
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008149
A set of nonlinear differential equations that describe the motion of fluids on a rotating sphere, fundamental to atmospheric and oceanic modeling. These equations are derived from the conservation laws of momentum, mass, and energy, along with the ideal gas law and hydrostatic approximation. They form the basis for most numerical weather prediction models.
