Navier-Stokes equations

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010637

A set of nonlinear partial differential equations that describe the motion of viscous fluid substances, based on the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. In atmospheric science, these equations form the basis of most numerical weather prediction models by governing the dynamics of the atmosphere, treated as a fluid on a rotating sphere. Because of their complexity, they are solved numerically using supercomputers, as no general analytical solution exists.
