Ekman spiral

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005300

A theoretical velocity profile observed in the Ekman layer of a rotating fluid, where the current direction progressively shifts with depth or height due to the balance between the Coriolis force and turbulent friction. In the Northern Hemisphere, the current vector turns clockwise with increasing depth in the ocean or increasing height in the atmosphere. This spiral typically extends to a depth or height where the current direction is opposite to that at the surface.
