Beta spiral
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010401
A method used in physical oceanography to determine absolute ocean currents from relative velocity measurements, particularly in regions where direct current measurements are scarce. It relies on the conservation of potential vorticity and the variation of the Coriolis parameter with latitude (the beta effect). The technique involves integrating the thermal wind equations along surfaces of constant density to infer the absolute velocity field.
