Beta ray

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003899

A stream of beta particles, which are high-energy electrons or positrons, emitted during radioactive decay. In the atmosphere, beta rays originate from the decay of naturally occurring radionuclides, such as radon and its decay products, and from cosmic ray interactions. These rays contribute to the ionization of atmospheric gases and are a component of environmental radiation.
