Radioactive-particle ionization
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008341
The process by which electrically neutral atoms or molecules in the atmosphere gain or lose electrons due to collisions with energetic particles emitted during radioactive decay. This creates ions that can influence atmospheric electrical properties and chemical reactions. Alpha and beta particles are particularly effective at causing ionization in the lower atmosphere.
