Radioactive decay
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008336
The spontaneous process by which an unstable atomic nucleus transforms into a more stable nucleus by emitting radiation, such as alpha particles, beta particles, or gamma rays. This process releases energy and changes the atomic number or mass of the element. It is a fundamental process in the Earth's energy budget and in the formation of atmospheric aerosols.
