Alpha ray

A stream of alpha particles, which are helium nuclei (two protons and two neutrons), emitted during the radioactive decay of certain unstable isotopes. These rays are highly ionizing but have a very short range in air, typically traveling only a few centimeters. Alpha rays are a component of natural background radiation in the atmosphere.
