Ionizing radiation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006649

Any type of radiation that carries enough energy to remove electrons from atoms or molecules, thereby creating ions. This includes electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays and gamma rays, as well as particle radiation like alpha particles, beta particles, and neutrons. In the atmosphere, ionizing radiation from cosmic rays and solar flares is responsible for the continuous production of ions, particularly in the upper atmosphere.
