Compton effect
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004563
The phenomenon where X-rays or gamma rays scatter off charged particles, typically electrons, resulting in a decrease in the energy and an increase in the wavelength of the scattered radiation. This inelastic scattering process demonstrates the particle-like nature of electromagnetic radiation. In atmospheric science, it is relevant for understanding the interaction of high-energy radiation with atmospheric constituents.
