Compressional wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004562

A type of wave in which the oscillations of the medium's particles are parallel to the direction of wave propagation, resulting in alternating regions of compression and rarefaction. Sound waves in the atmosphere are a prime example of compressional waves, traveling through the air by causing molecules to vibrate back and forth. These waves are also known as longitudinal waves.
