Rayleigh wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008426
A type of surface acoustic wave that propagates along the free surface of an elastic solid, such as the Earth's surface. These waves involve both compressional and shear motion, with particle motion being elliptical and retrograde. In seismology, Rayleigh waves are responsible for much of the ground shaking felt during earthquakes.
