Rayleigh scattering
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002269
The elastic scattering of electromagnetic radiation by particles that are significantly smaller than the wavelength of the incident light. This process causes shorter wavelengths, like blue and violet light, to be scattered more effectively than longer wavelengths. It is responsible for the blue appearance of the sky and the reddish hues of sunsets.
Changes in directions of electromagnetic energy by particles whose diameters are 1/16 wavelength or less. This type of scattering is responsible for the sky being blue.
