Rayleigh optical depth

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008424

A measure of the optical thickness of an atmosphere due to Rayleigh scattering by air molecules. It represents the total attenuation of light passing through a column of the atmosphere solely due to molecular scattering, ignoring aerosols and clouds. This value is wavelength-dependent, with shorter wavelengths experiencing greater scattering.
