Cloud optical depth

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004437

A dimensionless measure of how opaque a cloud is to radiation passing through it, indicating the extent to which light is attenuated by scattering and absorption within the cloud. A higher optical depth means less radiation can penetrate the cloud. This parameter is derived from satellite observations and is a key factor in calculating the radiative forcing of clouds in climate models.
