Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004436

A microscopic airborne particle, either solid or liquid, that serves as a site for water vapor to condense or deposit upon, leading to the formation of cloud droplets or ice crystals. Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) are active at supersaturations relative to water, while ice nuclei (IN) facilitate ice formation. Common examples include dust, sea salt, and sulfates.
