Crystallization nucleus
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004793
A microscopic particle in the atmosphere that serves as a site for the initiation of ice crystal formation from supercooled water vapor or droplets. These nuclei, often dust, pollen, or volcanic ash, provide a surface for water molecules to arrange into a crystalline structure. The presence and type of crystallization nuclei influence the microphysical properties of clouds and precipitation.
