Deposition nucleus

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004932

A type of ice nucleus, which is a microscopic particle suspended in the atmosphere, upon which water vapor can deposit directly as ice. This process occurs when the air is supersaturated with respect to ice, allowing ice crystals to form without the water vapor first condensing into a liquid droplet. Deposition nuclei are active at temperatures below 0°C and are less common than condensation nuclei.
