Deposition

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004931

The phase transition in which a substance in a gaseous state changes directly into a solid state, without passing through the liquid phase. In the atmosphere, this process occurs when water vapor turns directly into ice crystals, forming frost on surfaces or contributing to the growth of snowflakes and ice crystals within clouds. The reverse process, a solid changing directly to a gas, is called sublimation.
