Deposition

A formal out-of-court sworn testimony of a witness taken before a trial, used to gather information and preserve evidence. During a deposition, a deponent answers questions under oath, and the proceedings are recorded by a court reporter. The transcript can be used to impeach a witness or as evidence if the witness is unavailable for trial.
An oral statement made before an officer authorized by law to administer oaths. Such statements are often taken to examine potential witnesses, to obtain discovery, or to be used later in trial. See discovery.
