Supernumerary witness

An individual who attests to the signing of a legal document, such as a will, in addition to the minimum number of witnesses required by statute. Their signature is added as a precaution in case one of the necessary witnesses is later found to be incompetent or unavailable. If a statutorily required witness is disqualified, the testimony of the supernumerary witness can be used to prove the document's valid execution in probate court.
