Deposition

A formal, out-of-court sworn testimony given by a witness or party in a legal proceeding, such as an insurance claim dispute. It is conducted under oath before a court reporter and attorneys for both sides, allowing for discovery of facts and preservation of testimony. The recorded testimony can be used later in court, particularly if the witness is unavailable.
