Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002525

  1. Precipitation in the form of ice crystals, typically hexagonal in shape, that grow in the atmosphere and fall to the Earth's surface. Snowflakes form when supercooled water droplets freeze onto ice nuclei or when water vapor deposits directly onto existing ice crystals. The specific crystal habit depends on temperature and humidity conditions during formation, with dendrites forming around -15 degrees Celsius.

  2. Precipitation in the form of ice crystals, mainly of intricately branched, hexagonal form and often agglomerated into snowflakes, formed directly from the freezing [deposition] of the water vapor in the air.
