Contact nucleus

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004629

A microscopic particle that initiates the freezing of supercooled water droplets upon direct contact. These nuclei are typically insoluble and possess a crystalline structure similar to ice, allowing them to act as templates for ice crystal formation. Silver iodide is a common substance used as a contact nucleus in cloud seeding operations.
