Contact angle

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004627

The angle formed at the three-phase boundary where a liquid, gas, and solid intersect, measured within the liquid. In cloud physics, it describes the wettability of an atmospheric aerosol particle, which determines its effectiveness as a cloud condensation nucleus or ice nucleus. A smaller contact angle (less than 90 degrees) indicates better wettability and a higher propensity for the particle to initiate droplet or ice crystal formation.
