Epitaxis

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005404

The growth of a crystalline substance on the surface of another crystal, where the orientation of the new layer is determined by the crystal structure of the substrate. In atmospheric science, this process is relevant to ice nucleation, where an ice crystal grows on the surface of a foreign particle, known as an ice nucleus. The effectiveness of a particle as an ice nucleus depends on how well its crystal lattice structure matches that of ice, a condition known as good epitaxial fit.
