Aerosol optical depth

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003348

A dimensionless measure of the extinction of sunlight by aerosols as it passes through the atmosphere. It quantifies how much direct sunlight is prevented from reaching the ground due to scattering and absorption by aerosol particles. Higher values indicate a greater concentration of aerosols and reduced atmospheric transparency.
