Extinction

The reduction in intensity of electromagnetic radiation as it passes through a medium, due to absorption and scattering by particles and gases. In the atmosphere, extinction affects visibility and the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth's surface. It is quantified by the extinction coefficient.
