Extinction coefficient
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005516
A measure of how strongly a substance absorbs or scatters light at a specific wavelength per unit path length. It quantifies the reduction in intensity of electromagnetic radiation as it passes through a medium, such as the atmosphere. This coefficient is a key parameter in radiative transfer calculations and is expressed in units of inverse length, such as per meter or per kilometer.
