Absorption coefficient

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003201

A quantitative measure of how strongly a substance absorbs electromagnetic radiation at a particular wavelength or frequency. It represents the fraction of incident radiation absorbed per unit path length through the material. In atmospheric science, this coefficient is used to calculate the attenuation of solar or terrestrial radiation as it passes through atmospheric gases and aerosols.
