Absorption coefficient

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000075

A measure of how strongly a substance absorbs light at a specific wavelength. It quantifies the rate at which the intensity of light decreases as it passes through a material. The absorption coefficient is typically expressed in units of inverse length, such as cm⁻¹, and is related to absorbance by the path length and concentration of the absorbing species.
