External wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010502
A type of atmospheric or oceanic wave that propagates along a free surface, such as the interface between the atmosphere and space, or the ocean surface. These waves are characterized by their relatively fast propagation speeds and are often associated with large-scale atmospheric disturbances or tsunamis in the ocean. They are distinct from internal waves, which propagate within a fluid.
