Internal wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006604

A wave that propagates within a fluid medium where density varies with depth, with buoyancy acting as the restoring force. These waves occur in both the atmosphere and the ocean, often generated by flow over topography or by density discontinuities. Internal waves are responsible for vertical transport of momentum and energy, influencing mixing processes.
