Internal tides
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006602
Internal gravity waves generated within a stratified body of water at tidal frequencies. They are created when the flow of surface tides interacts with underwater topography such as continental slopes, sills, or seamounts. These waves propagate horizontally through the interior of the ocean, contributing significantly to vertical mixing and the dissipation of tidal energy.
