Internal gravity wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006601
A wave that propagates within a fluid medium, such as the atmosphere or ocean, rather than on its surface. Buoyancy acts as the restoring force, causing parcels of fluid displaced vertically to oscillate. Atmospheric internal gravity waves are generated by airflow over mountains, convective storms, and shear instability, transporting momentum and energy over long distances.
