Tidal wave

A misnomer for a tsunami, which is a series of ocean waves caused by large-scale disturbances such as underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. True tidal waves are the long-period waves generated by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun, which cause the regular rise and fall of ocean tides. Tsunamis are not related to astronomical tides.
