Internal water circulation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006603
The movement of water within a contained body, such as a lake, sea, or ocean basin, driven by density gradients, wind stress, and tidal forces. This circulation includes both horizontal and vertical motions, creating currents and overturning that redistribute heat, salt, and nutrients. The global thermohaline circulation is a planetary-scale example of internal water circulation in the oceans.
