Diapycnal mixing
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004972
The process by which properties like heat, salt, and momentum are transported across surfaces of constant potential density in a stratified fluid, such as the ocean or atmosphere. This mixing is driven by small-scale turbulence and internal waves, which dissipate energy and homogenize water masses. It is a key mechanism for redistributing tracers and influencing large-scale ocean circulation.
