Epipycnal mixing

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005401

The process of mixing that occurs primarily within a stably stratified layer of fluid, where density decreases with depth. This mixing is often driven by turbulence generated by wind stress at the surface or by internal waves. It primarily affects the horizontal distribution of properties within the layer, with limited vertical exchange across density interfaces.
